Wick CC faced the perennial problem of not beating F Troop on Wednesday at the village green. Rob won the toss and elected to field (better chasing!).
With F Troop getting off to a strong start and opening with Vale CC player Darren, Rob wisely threw the ball to Kenny who loves nothing more than a Vale (or Wick) scalp. First ball…bamboozler…stumps shattered…sweet like a chicken…cheerio Darren. At the other end Andy took three wickets in two overs, including a catch and a juggle from Amal at long on, to leave F Troop 57-4 at the 10 over mark. Steve picked up a wicket in the next over and with some tight bowling from Russ and then Gutsy, who was thundering in like James the angry tank engine, it looked like the F Troop total could be limited. However, Troopers Russell and Trividi steadied the ship both reaching the retiring score of 25 runs and, apart from a nice run out with Kenny and Amal combining, F Troop finished strongly to reach 133 runs.
The Wick innings started well with Rob and Dicky scoring well before Rob was bowled (or was he? His theory in the pub later was the ball came off the keepers pads – photos debunk this theory so must of just been another worldie). Dicky reached 25 with a leg side six before Amal got cruelly run out by a direct hit from a long throw (just ain’t village cricket). Wick reached the 10 over mark on 69-2. The next over Russ edged a ball to the keeper allowing Chris to enter the game for his Wick debut to join Tubsy who had walked on not knowing that F Troop fielders had planted ball magnets in their pockets. The laws of physics stymied the run rate alongside some good bowling from F Troop limiting the Wick runs. The run chase ultimately fell short with Wick on 98 runs after the allotted 20 overs.
Back to the Lamb where Paul awarded himself most improved player of the year for the sixth year running and we discussed potential team activities…Amsterdam tour, flight club, fight club, golf days, Barry Town United trip, awards night…none will likely happen, but beer talks a good game.
