Wednesday. Wick. Windy. When Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web, he didn’t expect that his www would become just as synonymous with village cricket in South Wales as it was to the internet.
In overcast conditions, the knitwear was out in force as Wick take on our most local rivals, Colwinston on the village green. Thanks to some unhinged whatsapp admin in the hours before the game, which included: two separate availability polls, a rogue recruitment officer and last-minute injuries, Wick arrived at the village green with 13 players including an unexpected Gutsy who, to his credit, umpired for 20 overs despite not actually playing.
Having lost to Colwinston on their patch earlier in the season, Wick were keen to make amends, especially with the advantage of playing on an actual cricket pitch and not having to retire if you hit a six, as is one of the rules at the Colwinston ground.
Wick CC - 176 for 2 (20.0): Ben Wade 30*, Colin Dixon 26*, Math Williams 26*, Jeff Cole 25*
Colwinston CC - 148 for 5 (20.0): Simon Stratten 4-23, Kenny Thomas 1-27
SCORECARD
Russ meandered off to the middle and came back with the news that Wick were batting. Did a coin toss take place? Who knows. Wick, boasting a very strong batting line-up opened with stalwart Math alongside Jeff, hoping to continue his fine form in what some are describing as his breakout year (Cricket-wise). It didn’t take Math long to get his eye in as he swiftly made his 25 and retired. Next in was Colin and he was in no mood to hang around. After taking a few attempts to dial in his radar he got his innings going with a massive six down the slope and was soon walking back with an unbeaten 26.
Ben was next to the middle, a few good shots including a 6 into the church yard and he was retired for 30. All the while Jeff was chipping away before he himself retired for 25. 4 batters, 4 retirements. Next in was Chris. With Owen’s advice of ‘hit it’ ringing in his ear, a first ball edge into the keepers’ gloves sent him back to the pavilion and brought a sense of familiarity to the village green. Following a classic Russ retirement, Owen himself then meandered out to the middle and was swiftly caught behind for an action packed 5. This left Steve and Kenny to see out the final few balls, ending on 5 and 3 not out respectively.
Setting a total of 176 (the highest Wick T20 total in recent memory) it was over to Wick’s bowling attack to hopefully finish the job. Our fielding innings was the story of one man, Simon. Having bowled an unprecedented number of no balls in our recent match v Lisvane, Hollywood managed to find his range and took 4 wickets in a devastating 3 over spell, putting wick firmly on the front foot. The solid bowling made up for what was on occasion quite lax fielding, with Kenny picking up a wicket and the rest of the Wick bowling attack doing a good job of restricting their opposition to 148 and giving the home side a win by 28 runs.
A weekend off for Wick before a rare away trip and a first ever visit to Blaengarw & Coedely on August 3rd, our opponents in the season opener. Thanks as always to CGI and The Star Inn, Wick for their ongoing support.
