Playing cricket in Colwinston is like buying a Gremlin as it comes with specific instructions. One of those is don’t hit a six clear of the hedge into the campsite or you have to retire which is exactly what Iestyn did in the second over of the game. Never seen a man so dejected after clearing the rope/hedge. The rest of the innings was a mix of the haves (runs) and the haves not (no runs) as Colin and Rob both retired at 30 (rule 6) with Gutsy the only other player reaching double figures with the bat. Wick ended on 128 of the 20 overs, felt a little bit of an under par total at the time.
Kenny was effervescent in the field as he has a few Vale CC compadres in the Colwinston side and this increased the vocal output which always heightens the buzz around the game. Tubsy struck early before Colwinston got the run rate going helped by Amal who was determined to bowl the longest over of his career, uphill in the heat. It was the spin twins of Russ and Rob who turned the tide with Russ picking up three wickets and Rob catching one off his own bowling. Dicky took some flack around his new keeping gloves not seeming to work until he took two catches and a ball straight to the gullet and a slither of sympathy appeared momentarily. Gutsy and Carl continued the good bowling getting one a piece – first scalp for Carl as a Wick player, congratulations. Then some great death bowling by Colin who broke his bowling duck and Leo who ended the Colwinston innings with two wickets in his last two balls. Wick winning by 8 runs.
Great game, close throughout. Thanks to Colwinston for hosting and for treating us to sausage and chips to wash down the beer back at the Sycamore Inn. Kenny rightly awarded the man of the match to Russ before he got a pint for himself out of the opposition skipper.
