First outing for Wick CC who headed to Newbridge Fields to take on F-Troop who are celebrating their 50th year as a club. Would wilful Wick win, would woeful Wick waste wickets, would wonderful Wednesday wow!
Well if you’re a Wick fan then more of the wow than the win as F-Troop pipped Wick at the post yet again, reaching the target with three balls left of the game. It ebbed and flowed like a low stakes, low quality premier league title race each team having the momentum and then letting it go.
Wick CC - 110 for 3 (20.0) : Steve Collins 25*, Leo Kelly 21*
F-Troop - 114 for 5 (19.3) : P.Thomas 25*, Ashely Taylor 1-11, Sam Boughton 1-12
Some Wick debuts – Josh who has flown in from South Africa to visit his old Pops Russ. Ash, Vale alumni who kindly stepped in late and young gun and future spinning superstar Sam making his senior debut.
Wick posted 110 with Steve, recovering from exhaustion after leaving his bat in his car, not out on 25 and Leo playing off his pads with aplomb ending unbeaten on 21.
The F-Troop run chase started strongly but Leo, Ash and Sam all took wickets. Josh and Kenny put the squeeze on the run chase and a Wick win was on the cards. But village cricket needs village cricket moments and Wick missed a run-out they should have took, took a run-out they should have missed and saw the first hat-trick of the season – one player, three dropped catches…kept the match ball.
Great to be back playing and our first home game (weather permitting) is on Sunday v Penarth.
